C.O.P.E. believes that all youth deserve the opportunity to receive a quality education. C.O.P.E. serves youth whose diversified needs require supportive, individalized instructional attention. We believe that their chances for a quality education are enhanced through the availability of specialized, community-based, alternative programs. C.O.P.E. believes that youth who face academic, vocational and social/emotional barriers deserve the chance to improve their skills. We enable students to build their educational and occupational competency in preparation for adult life. C.O.P.E. believes that these youth are worthy of the best efforts of our staff and community. Therefore, we are committed to providing the highest quality eduacational, mentoring, life skills, substance abuse prevention and violence prevention services to ensure that these youth become successful members of our community.

n January of 1996, COPE initiated a classroom for 10-12 year old youth expelled from public school as a result of violations of the states "weapons in school" law. This program, funded by participating school districts and the Washtenaw United Way, was encouraged by local school district Superintendents. It was felt that there were no alternatives available in the community for youth for whom expulsion was mandatory under the new state law.

The Middle School Alternative Program is housed as a self-contained classroom in the Ypsilanti/Willow Run COPE Program building. Students spend half of the school day with our Middle School Alternative Teacher, and the balance of the day with various teaching and support staff, the program is designed to serve a maximum of ten students.
